My husband always asks what I am painting, but I refuse to tell him because I'm afraid it won't come out looking all right. This time he asked who it was and I said: "No one in particular..." and he said: "Until it's done, right?" And yes, as usual, there is a back story with this one.
She is another of my original characters. This one is Marin, who is not only heir to the throne but a demi-god as well. She was kidnapped as a child and only much later learns her true identity first as ruler of the land and second as a creator of the world she lives in. She has a special talent that is the only obvious manifestation of her divinity: mathematical skills beyond belief and code breaking. She has a twin sister as well, who looks just like her. (Not pictured, ha ha.)
The glowing pendant around her neck represents her connection to the moon. The bird perched on her shoulder and his bluish color also symbolize this connection. She is in a forest because she spends much of her time there, and the man she falls in love with has a special connection to trees.
Photoshop CS5 and Wacom Intuos4. Only references used were my own hands and body for the pose. I also looked at many pictures of feathers to see what they looked like, but nothing is closely taken from anything I looked at.
I am quite pleased with the face; this is one of the few paintings I have done of one of my characters where the face came out looking very, very much how I have always envisioned it.
